It seems like Jesus was just born yesterday, doesn’t it? Six days ago we had our Christmas Eve services and the baby Jesus popped out into the manger in all our nativity scenes. Young men and women all over the world dressed in costumes to play Mary or Joseph or shepherds or angels. Much of what we call “regular life” shut down for a few days—perhaps you are still shut down until Tuesday with the New Year? The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing—and they sang of a birth: the birth of a child. A child who would change everything just by his existence, but a child nonetheless. A wee little baby, harmless and helpless in the way babies are.

And here we are a week later, and Jesus is already in trouble. Perhaps some of you have had children who seemed to be born teenagers, full of sass and stubbornness (which they clearly get from the other side of the family), determined to walk, to talk, to grasp after every inch of life. I’m not talking about my children, of course, but perhaps some of you have had children who seemed to be born teenagers.

We have so little to go on with Jesus, so very few details of his young life. This story is one of those details preserved—a story seeming to be of rebellion and teenage foolishness. Every year the family went to Jerusalem for the Passover. Every year they took Jesus for this religious festival. They traveled with family, with community, children running about the animals—not exactly unsupervised, but not watched closely either. And so when they turned to go home, Jesus had the perfect opportunity to get lost a bit. He stayed behind in the temple to study with the elders. His parents traveled a day towards home and then did not find him at evening roll call. They traveled back a day (and how worried they must have been!). Finally on the third day they found him in the temple where they’d left him, sitting with the teachers, the elders, discussing scripture and theology like he was born to it. And when his mother saw him, she came up on him and said, “Child, how could you DO this to us?”

And Jesus said, it’s your own fault if you were worried. Duh. I was at church.

Well, I don’t know what Joseph and Mary said to him, but after that scripture says that Jesus hauled back to Nazareth and toed the line. The next we hear from Jesus he is 30 years old, and while I know a lot of us parents have threatened to ground our children until they are 30, this is the only case I have ever heard of where the parent managed to make it stick.

I suspect Luke gives us this story as a deep insight into the character of Jesus. Mary, Luke says, treasured all these things in her heart. I think one of the things Mary must have treasured about her son was the wild streak that set him to run off to the temple for three days—not for the worry it caused his parents, but for the chord it struck in her own soul. Luke writes Mary’s name differently in the greek—he calls her Mariam. We like to keep our Gospels tidy, and so our translators have done us the favor of synchronizing the name of the mother of Jesus; from Mariam we get Mary, and therefore we lose the meaning of her name, which was Rebellion. Mary, wife of Joseph. Mariam, mother of Jesus. Miriam, sister and protector of Moses, leader of the Israelites with tambourines and dancing, instigator, calling out Moses for his foolishness. Rebellion. Strength. Noncomformity. A willingness, no a desire, to step outside the carefully scripted roles assigned. This was the legacy Mary had for her son, so that even in her distress she could look at her wayward son and say, “YES, this is my child.”

Once while traveling with our children we lost one of them in a hotel. We had just checked in to a cheap hotel with 4 stories in the middle of nowhere South Dakota. We had been on the road, moving to New Jersey, for four weeks or so now. The children were growing accustomed to strange places and apparently had lost their fear. We paid for the room, got the luggage in the door, started to unpack, and then realized that one of the boys was missing. He wasn’t in the bathroom, under the bed, on the balcony or back by the car. He wasn’t in the lobby, the elevator, the stairs, or by the vending machines. He was only 4 years old and I started to panic. I imagined the ugly face of the stranger who must have taken my child. I saw visions of his dying body. The next week of police investigations loomed large in my mind. Life as I knew it was over. I called the front desk and they sent forth minions to find this child. I think the next week of police investigations loomed large in their minds too. And then suddenly, 15 minutes later, my son walked off the elevator with a big smile on his face and two quarters in his hand. He had gone floor to floor and searched every vending machine and coin operated laundry to see if anybody had left their change, and he had found two quarters. He positively beamed. I collapsed with relief. I looked at him and smiled—this was indeed my son; that was totally something my sister would do.

I grounded him until he is 30. He has a few more years left on his sentence.

I think Mary, Mariam, Ms. Rebellion herself, looked at her child and thought, “Yes! This IS my son.” And she treasured all these things in her heart—she, Mary, this woman who crept outside of carefully scripted roles and bore a child out of wedlock while engaged to this other man Joseph and then dared to call it good and claim it as the will of God. This IS my son. From where did Jesus get his stubborn habits of moving unexpectedly, caring outside of the lines, healing brokenness thought unreedemable? You might say, “Oh that is a holy quality of God.” But I say he gets that from his mother.

I’ve been playing with the image of stealing home with this passage. This is a difficult metaphor for me to work with as I know nothing about baseball except what wikipedia provides and the occasional glances at a ball game I have been forced to watch by fanatical viewers of said game. You know, how you go to someone’s house and the game is on and they say, “Come watch, I’ll explain it all to you—you’ll love it.” And you don’t really love it, and they DO explain it all to you. But the one piece that intrigues me—the single delight I have in baseball is the practice of stealing bases. Here is what I know of the practice: a runner on base might steal 2nd or 3rd base while the pitcher is distracted with the next person up to bat. If they manage to get to the next base without getting tagged or if there isn’t a fly ball caught or if any other number of conditions are met, then the runner keeps the base. If not, they have to try to get back to the original base or they’re out. It’s very complicated, actually, and I don’t understand the rules. But I love to watch the mischevious look on a player’s face as they set about to frustrate the pitcher and the basemen. I love the laughter of the crowd as they watch what is happening behind the pitcher’s back. According to wikipedia, stealing home is the hardest, because the pitcher almost always gets the ball home before the runner gets there. But it happens.

Also according to wikipedia, you’re not supposed to steal first base either—but sometimes on a third out and the ball doesn’t get caught, a runner gets to first base without being tagged. But they don’t call it stealing first; they call it a “strikeout plus a wild pitch.” And, according to wikipedia: “Former Pittsburgh Pirate manager Lloyd McClendon is jokingly referred to as having ‘stolen first’ in a June 26, 2001 game – after disputing a call at first base, he yanked the base out of the ground and left the field with it, delaying the game.” I don’t know who this guy is, but I kinda like him.

This is what I love about baseball, that sometimes outside of the regular game a runner might steal a base or get home when they weren’t supposed to. I love that there’s a way to circumvent the usual rules of the game and move on closer to home without explicit permission. Of course, it’s baseball, so we have created extensive rules about stealing bases and formalized how stealing is recorded. But still, I have watched the faces of players stealing a base, and they are laughing with wild glee—I love that.

And I imagine there was something of that wild glee in Jesus as he stole away to the temple for three days—the same look in his eyes my son had when he stepped off the elevator with his two quarters. Didn’t you know I would search every vending machine? Didn’t you know I would be at my father’s house? Didn’t you know I would steal that base when you weren’t looking? Didn’t you know I would say yes to God?

God is constantly stealing home with us, isn’t He? When we aren’t looking, when we have all our rules in place, our ducks in a row, God looks, pauses, waits, creeps, shuffles a couple of steps off base, goes back, grins, maybe spits, feints left, feints right, and then when you weren’t quite ready, God does it—the Spirit darts forward and steals home right before your very eyes and before you can even tag Her with the ball She slides homes and calls SAFE!

I know, I don’t know much about baseball. You can tell me all the rules over coffee hour and speak to me of who has the best career statistics for stealing bases, if you must. I am going to need coffee for that. But I know God, and I know I’ve watched God steal home more times than I can count. It’s always startling. And it’s always delightful.

A few years ago when I worked at Bellevue hospital as a chaplain, I was assigned to the prison floor. I met a man who had done horrible things and therefore serving a few years sentence. He was utterly unrepentant. I could barely meet with him. He spoke of getting out of jail and doing these horrible things again. He was not my favorite patient to visit—I dreaded him, in fact. He had absolutely no awareness of the horror of what he had done. When I finished visiting a patient, I usually prayed with them. And I usually asked what they wanted me to pray for. I was tempted with this man to pray that he changed. To pray that he understand what he had done. To pray that nobody every let him out of prison again. I did not have a single charitable thought for this man. I asked him what to pray for. He said, “My children—“ and he started to say more, but I cut him off. “Excellent!” I said. “I will pray for your children.” That I could do. I could not pray for this man, but I could pray for his children. That, I could do. The Spirit stole a base in there—showing up for a brief moment in a place that I could not imagine God would be. I could pray for his children.

That prison floor was temporary home to prisoners from Riker’s Island and The Tombs—the Tombs is a short-term jail in the city. And it was home to The Boat, which is a short-term prison barge in the harbor. Did you know there’s a prison boat in the harbor? In 2012? The men told me The Boat is very cold and windy at night. They sleep in the ballroom and the guards patrol from the balcony. It’s not a good place to be. I can’t think of much worse places to be, actually.

I met a man who had been on The Boat, and now he was at Riker’s Island. I wasn’t ever very clear on what he did to get into prison, but he was very sick and would probably never leave prison. People tell you all kinds of things about why they are in prison. I bet some of it was truthful and some of it wasn’t—just like people tell me all kinds of things about why they weren’t in church on Sunday. One guy told me that he was guilty only of wearing the same shirt as the guy who robbed the convenience store. One guy had been at Riker’s seven times. I said, “I guess you kinda like it here?” He said, “There’s worse places.” I guess that’s true.

But Mr. Smith mostly just smiled and said it was a long story. And since we only had a little while for visits, he didn’t feel like talking much about what had happened. He was more concerned with what was going to happen next.

We met one day off the prison floor when he was out and about for various treatments. He called me over, “Chaplain! Come over here! I have something to tell you!” I was easy to spot, I think, in my suit jacket with the terrified look on my face. We’d been given two days of “training” and then set loose on our floors to visit patients. For a person scared of rejection, chaplaincy is not an easy call. You get used to it after a while—the gruffness of people in pain, the constant worry that hovers in the halls. But those first few days are startling. Mr. Smith called me over with a big cheerful grin, flanked by officers, shackled to the gurney. He wanted me to know that he had a Bible upstairs, and that he’d welcome a visit. “We’re going to be friends,” he said.

He had hopes and dreams. He was going to get out of prison and turn his life around—in fact his life was ALREADY turned around. When he got out he was going to move his sister and his nieces and nephews to the suburbs and start over. He was going to get straight and get a job and take care of things like he felt he should have been. He missed his mother. I think he was sicker than the length of his prison sentence, but they sure were beautiful dreams. He had a smile for everyone and a quick joke. The prison guards even liked him—it takes something special for that. He almost died one day during surgery, and when he came back the floor nurses said, “Mr. Smith—you almost DIED. Don’t DO that.”

I read him a psalm, “I am weary with my moaning;
 every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. 
My eyes waste away because of grief; they grow weak because of all my foes.” I came back again, ready to read another psalm, and he said, “Chaplain—I have one for YOU.” And he read, “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; 
my heart is like wax; 
it is melted within my breast; my mouth is dried up like a potsherd,
 and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
 you lay me in the dust of death.”

Back and forth we went with scripture over many visits until he was sent back to Riker’s. Sometimes I would visit the other man who beat his wife and children and he would say things like, “I’m thinking about killing myself. And I might take someone with me.” And he’d look at me sly-like. So I’d go see Mr. Smith who would read to me: “Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. 
The Lord has heard my supplication;
 the Lord accepts my prayer. 
All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;
 they shall turn back, and in a moment be put to shame.”

One day Mr. Smith told me about his pigeons. His father had lived in a tall building in the city where he had access to the roof, so Mr. Smith kept pigeons. He kept them in a box in the dark for a long time until they knew for sure where home was. And then he would let them fly out of the box and wait for them all to come home. He would wait until the very last one came home—sometimes for hours. He said to me, “This is how God is with us—he keeps us until we know where home is, and then he waits until the last one comes home.” I suppose Mr. Smith would have told me even that guy who beat his wife. I wonder if God gets tired waiting on that rooftop, though—some of us stray pretty far. Mr. Smith asked me not to forget him—to tell people about his pigeons. So now maybe you won’t forget him either.

God shows up in the strangest places, I swear—a prison, even. And yet, when I meet Jesus there in those places, he just grins like he stole a base and says, didn’t you know this is exactly where I’d be?

Advent Foolishness: Joy. Or Love Part Deux

This is my last advent post this year, seeing as how the baby Jesus is about to come squalling into the world in all his human particularity. Two more days and I'll be preaching in my pajamas (and a stole) for Christmas morning, before abandoning all pretense of religion and hurrying home to watch my children destroy my beautiful wrapping job. 

This fourth Sunday in advent is supposed to be Joy, I have it on good authority. But since I am not preaching advent this year, I have cheerfully abandoned the rules of the game. And anyway, love can be joyful. I have that on good authority as well.

And love can be a gigantic, smothering, exhausting mess. I'm saying for a friend.

There's a book I've been reading in tiny bits and pieces because it's dense and academic. It's the kind of book I was expected to read in a day in grad school, but never could do. I think I'm waiting for this kind of love, although I suspect it's rare. I figure this is the kind of love God has for us, although some of the best theologians disagree. So here's a tiny slice of it.
Eros is awakened by the glimmering and disappearance of beings that remain perennially mysterious...this persistent absence is not a flaw, nor would union satisfy the longing for relationship. In desiring relationship, one desires something different from absorption or union. In desire, it is the unique and mysterious quality of the beloved that is delightful. For Levinas, a metaphysical desire for the absent "true life" is a preservation of infinity and transcendence. Aristophanes' parable of a being split in half by Zeus captures part of the feeling of eros (Symposium 189d-193d). The ego is impoverished. But its hunger and emptiness is not filled by possession. It is filled only by absence. Or to put the case less paradoxically, the kind of reality eros yearns for is not a possessable thing. The abyss within the self cannot be filled simply by pouring more stuff into it. It is eased only in the encounter with transcendence. Relationship, rather than possession, articulates erotic desire because relationship does not abolish but preserves the infinity of others. Eros thrives in this medium in which other beings are simultaneously present and absent: present to conversation, caress, memory, obligation, compassion, and affection; but absent to the consummation that would unify two infinitely separate beings into one. This delight in an exterior other expresses the "non-nostalgic" nature of desire, the plenitude and joy of the being who experiences it" (Levinas, Collected Philosophical Papers, 57).

Eros is not dismayed by the exteriority of the other.

Advent Foolishness: So This Happened

Once, when I was in seminary, the children were on free lunch. And because we were on free lunch, the school charitably connected us to other community organizations that existed to serve the poor.

Around Thanksgiving, I got a call from one of the organizations saying, "Mrs. Mulligan, this is Mr. Smith from XYZ Family Outreach. We have a turkey for you and some fixings."

I thanked Mr. Smith very much but explained that we would be away with family that year for Thanksgiving.

He paused. Then, "How about Christmas? We do a nice thing for families then." I said sure thing, that would be nice, and he marked me down for the Christmas nice thing. And then I forgot all about the phone call.

A few days before Christmas Mr. Smith from XYZ called me again and said, "Mrs. Mulligan, we will be by on Tuesday to bring you a turkey and a few things to brighten your holiday." 

I confess that my holiday was already bright, seeing as how my classes were over for the semester, the children were out of school, and we were all sleeping in late, allowing for peace to reign over the household. But seeing as how that wasn't what Mr. Smith was referring to--seeing as how what he meant was that we were on free lunch and therefore poor and therefore needing brightness in our dim life, I said, "Oh! That will be nice. Thank you!"

On Tuesday I heard a commotion outside my apartment. I looked out the window and saw a firetruck and a pick up truck, lights flashing, sirens blaring, and Santa in full regalia pulling up to the curb. 20 volunteers leaped out of the vehicles and rushed our home. "Ho Ho Ho!!! Merry Christmas!" yelled Santa above the sound of the firetruck. My children looked on in utter fascination. So did my neighbors. 

The volunteers brought in a turkey and some fixings. And then they brought in the presents. I hadn't exactly invited them in, but they were hard to keep out. Mr. Smith pulled them back a bit with an exasperated, "Hey! Don't go IN the house!!" I'm sure they were surprised to see that I already had presents under the tree--Free Lunch and Poor does not always mean Without. Not only that, but the house smelled like cookies and pine tree.

They left as they came, leaping into their trucks like Santa and the elves, lights flashing, sirens blazing. This wasn't a township with a lot of poor people, and they were quite pleased they'd found some. the neighbors' curtains twitched closed, a few stood laughing on the sidewalk. My children were pleased but puzzled as to why Santa had shown up 2 days early--and also why he only went to one house. The Oldest reminded me that he'd known for a while about the Santa conspiracy. I hushed him in case his brother was paying attention.

I was, actually, mortified. Not at receiving charity, but at the lights and sirens and 20 volunteers in my home. I think I had imagined that Mr. Smith might pop by in his generic sedan and leave a little bag, but this was a Broadway production. Although none of my neighbors in seminary were wealthy, the turkey donation marked us. I kept my smile and my chuckle going, but I haven't forgotten the neighbors' stares.

A little while later that Tuesday afternoon, there was a knock at the door. My neighbor was just stopping by. With a gi-normous Christmas patterned trash bag full of toys. She said, "The First Lady was just asking me if I knew anyone who needed toys for Christmas. I told her I knew just the family." She winked at me, and I, somewhat confused, nodded and said thank you. She'd been watching the firetruck Santa from her window. I about died inside. She went on her way, and I sat there wondering why Michelle Obama was asking my neighbor about toys.

It was several hours later when it hit me that in many churches the Pastor's wife is called the First Lady, and that I had just received the end result of a church toy drive that never made it to ABC Family Outreach where another Mr. Smith or Ms. Jones might be distributing toys. I picked out a few things and took the bag to LMNOP Family Outreach. It came to them after Christmas, but I imagine they found a use for it.

But then again, everybody all the way back to Mr. Smith at XYZ was figuring I had a use for it too.

It's an odd thing, to pair gratitude with resentment. The next year Mr. Smith called and I said, "No thank you. We're getting a ham this year. God bless." So no turkey, no Santa, no firetruck, no First Lady. But we did have a ham and some fixings and some things under the tree. I won't say I got my dignity back, seeing as how I probably never had it to start.

Advent Foolishness: Love

would be nothing new at all.
Possibly last week was love
and this week was hope
but I blogged about joy as hope
and is this week the week of the special purple candle or is that next?
or is it a special pink candle?
or are they all pink candles and there's one blue one?

i didn't grow up in a church

three years of pastoring a church didn't stick any better. clearly.

once, when I was new to working at a church,
I arrived early
--astonishing, I know--
and I noticed
that 
the candles were not yet lit.
This concerned me greatly.
so
I
lit 
them.
Horrified, the church office manager blew them out.
But now we needed
new
candles
because the idea is that we don't light the candles until that particular week.

Once,
at a Maundy Thursday service
--although it may have been called a Tenebrae
or a Service of Shadows
or some such--
and this was recently, too
in April this year, actually,
I blew out the last candle
because it seemed the thing to do
but it apparently wasn't
because when
the service
was over
the pastor said,
"Who blew out my candle????"
Oops.

Apparently I have a thing with candles.

I don't have much patience with my joy
I
am
an
immediate
gratification
kind
of
joy
person.

Willing to bet some of you are too, and so this nonsensical breaking up of lines and never getting to the point is probably annoying the joy right out of you.

I was a terrible pregnant

--for nine months straight--
unpleasant.
I sympathized most

waiting for the creature
to hatch
and claw its way out.

I don't wait well.

the candles
and
blown them out

and on to the New Year
Let the sparks fly

I stuck to it, I did!
Only once did I pause

Because who wants

joy
when I think
this week is supposed to be love.

Well what's the difference anyway?
To love is to sink into joy.
To joy is to sink into love.

I think joy should be a verb.

Turkey Blessings

I attended a Thanksgiving lunch today at Rider University, where I am the protestant chaplain. They asked me to give a "closing blessing", which I interpreted to mean a benediction of sorts. So I did, and here it is.

Friends, we are gathered today to give thanks for the gift of community and the opportunity to share a meal with one another. Here at Rider we enjoy plentiful meals, companionship, the chance to learn from one another, and a safe environment full of warmth, electricity, the internet, and people who care for us. 
As we leave here today and as we leave campus to return home, let us remember that there are many who do not have these luxuries. We exist at this moment in a particular place of privilege following the destructive storm in October which has left many people homeless and housing vulnerable along the East Coast and outside the U.S. in the Caribbean. 
Beyond that, we have gathered in this room a tremendously talented pool of students, faculty and staff. We have been given much, for which we give thanks. We have much to offer the world, may we do this also. 
May you go from this full meal of good food and feast of brilliant words, to go into the world to stand in solidarity with others. May your heart inspire your work, and may your work be of good use to our larger communities beyond this campus. May your spirits be lifted by the promise that we are not alone in this world. May you feel strongly the ties that bind us to one another.

A Tangled Web of Nothing

I haven't blogged in a while, mostly because I've been very busy living and working. Blogging takes dedicated hours of time, and I've not had any of those lately. Or actually, I haven't had any dedicated hours of time that I was willing to give to blogging.

October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and last year I dedicated quite a bit of blogging time to that subject. This year, I felt the weight of memories in a different way and stayed silent. I'm working in and around a lot of other people's triggers, memories, and fears on a daily basis, and I've cherished the quiet times I can carve out with no people around. 

I miss writing regularly.

This month is National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short. Thousands of people take 30 days and write a 50,000 word novel, beginning November 1 and crossing the finish line by November 30. None of us are pretending this will be the novel of the century, but many of us will actually finish a complete novel, and how cool is that?

Last year I started a novel I called "The Snail." I got stuck and distracted, and didn't get through it. But this year I thought I would try again. This year's novel shall be called, "A Tangled Web of Nothing." 

Between the busyness and the extra-tropical-storm Sandy and the heaviness of memories that lurked last month, I think my state of mind might be best described as a tangled web of nothing. Here's to hoping that regular writing will make something of those strands.

I've been thinking about safe spaces again (here's a blog post from two years ago when I was thinking about safe spaces in another context). It all started a month ago when my car was vandalized in the middle of the night. We just moved here in July, and it's a nice place to live. It's still a nice place to live, but the spray-painted obscenities on my car got me thinking about old memories.

As we were scrubbing the paint off my car, my son said to me, "Huh. That's really strange. This never happened in our old house where I always thought we weren't safe. I thought we were safe here. I guess you just don't know." I thought that was pretty brilliant, actually. He also said all the cuss words I was thinking so I didn't have to.

I had to go preach that morning about love, so I used the vandalism in my sermon. I cleaned off the paint as best I could, and set it aside. But three days later a detective called and asked if anyone was angry with me. I realized in that moment that although I didn't think anyone was angry with me, that I was very angry with some anonymous vandal, and that the entire thing had unsettled me in unexpected ways.

Monday Sabbath

It has been a very long time since I had a job where I didn't work Sundays. In fact, it has been since 2001, when I first started working for the church as an employee (how is it possible that was only 11 years ago??). For a long time now, I have simply rested on whatever day was open in the week. Most of the time that was the day of the week when I didn't have anything that had to be done immediately, so that a day off didn't put me far behind.

These days, though, there's never a day when there isn't work that needs to be done immediately. In fact, I am past due on all kinds of stuff, and the never-ending, self-critical ticker-tape parade of things that must be done keeps me going at quite a pace. It's good to be busy. It's good to be working. And it's good work too--the students and their families are a delight!

A few weeks ago I realized I hadn't taken a day off in a while, and there didn't look to be a good day to take off anytime soon either. So I decided to declare Monday my sabbath day.

It's a lot harder than I thought it would be.

It's National Suicide Prevention Day, so I'm reposting this sermon I wrote for our community long after Maggie died. It took a long time to find the words)

Six years ago this month, a young girl committed suicide in my hometown. I never met her, but I always felt as if I should have, because she was friends with some of the students I worked with. This last year I wrote a sermon for her and for our youth group. I always wished I'd been able to find the words in 2003, but maybe it just takes time. A phone call today reminded me of Maggie and how much I wish I could have been there for her.

I hesitate to bring it to you today, because it seems like after three years of seminary I should have developed more “sophisticated taste.” But this is the story that started me on this journey, and it seems fitting to pause and give thanks by returning to my theological roots. Perhaps you have your own connection to this parable—so many of us do.

The Work IS Love

I preached this morning at the Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church, with gratitude to the Rev. Dr. Nina Reeder for the invitation. LRPC is one of the four churches where I serve as youth pastor, and they are the host church for the Love of God (L.O.G.) retreat program in New Jersey.

I have preached this sermon a time or two before. It's one of my favorites. I was just about to start re-working it this morning, when I was rudely interrupted by life. If you have read this sermon before, go on through. The second half is quite different.

The Song of Solomon is also known as the Song of Songs, or the Canticle of Canticles. It is spoken of in this way as THE song of songs, as in the best of the songs, because the poem is about two lovers who are magnificent in every way. Tradition holds that the song was written by Solomon because his name appears once in the text. It is a difficult text to date, however, and it was fairly common to ascribe literature to Solomon or David or another prominent figure. Some scholars believe that the song was written by a woman. Regardless of who wrote the song, perhaps what is remarkable is that it has been preserved as scripture in our Bibles. The Song of Songs is eight chapters of scripture that speak frankly of passionate longing for another person. It begins with the woman calling out for her beloved. She desires to meet with him, and he tells her where she can find him, in the pastures at noon. They flatter each other playfully and sweetly, with tender words of love and adoration. She claims to be a rose, a lily; to her friends, the daughters of Jerusalem, she tells how wonderful is her companion. And then she says, “The voice of my beloved! Look, here he comes.”

Do you remember how it feels to be in love like that? Close your eyes for a moment and conjure the image of somebody you have loved. Perhaps it is the person sitting next to you in the pew. Perhaps

These days I'm working with four churches to coordinate their youth ministry programs. In various ways they are all working together, but in various ways they are all maintaining their own identities. My Sunday morning time is split among the churches: two Sundays a month at one church, one Sunday a month at two of the churches, and if there's a fifth Sunday I wander over to the other church. It's complicated.

Sometimes I preach, and sometimes I'm just in church. Each of the churches is distinctly Presbyterian in in their liturgies, and yet they each have their own traditions and habits that distinguish them from one another. I'm learning names, but I have to admit I'm learning faces faster. It's going to take me a while to sort everyone out.

One commonality is the coffee hour. Coffee hour is like a church cocktail party without the booze--which is probably a good thing: coffee hour would be pretty wild if we were spiking the joe. Every church has its habits about coffee hour--half n half vs. creamer, muffins or no muffins, juice for the kids, tables and chairs variously set up--they all have their ways.

At every coffee hour, and especially if I've preached that morning, I greet between 40 and 100 people in the course of 20 or 30 minutes. Some people are brief, others follow me about the room with extended conversation. Sometimes I seek certain people out.

It's a bit dizzying, actually, all these people with their stories, lives, situations, wants, and and needs.

I Will Build You a Hut

I preached this morning at West Trenton Presbyterian Church. My thanks to the Rev. Jim Pruner for lending his pulpit, and to the fine congregation of that church, who welcomed me kindly and with enthusiasm.

This sermon includes information about the Love of God (L.O.G.) student-led retreat program, which we began last weekend with the help of the L.O.G. community in South Bend, Indiana. I am grateful to the students and adults who brought us this program at their own cost, and to the Rev. Terry McBride (who was my youth pastor in 1985-1989). And thanks be to God for the gift of this ministry.

Scripture Readings: Exodus 25:1-9, 26:15-25 and Matthew 17:1-8

The story of the Transfiguration begins with the words “Six days later,” and when I began to work with this passage my first thought was, “Six days after what?” Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter, James and James’ brother, John, and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. What were they doing six days before? So I flipped back a chapter to see.

A week or so before Jesus took his disciples up to the mountain top, Jesus had fed four thousand people crowded on a hillside. The people had gathered to hear him speak and brought their loved ones for healing. They had not thought to bring food, and so Jesus fed them, with seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. After making plenty out of scarcity, Jesus sent away the crowds and wandered off again, alone in a boat. The local religious leaders came to meet Jesus, asking for a sign from heaven. It seems that the miraculous healings and the feeding of four thousand people from a nearly empty bread basket was not enough, so Jesus turned them away saying, “you know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.” Or in other words: you can figure out tomorrow’s weather just looking at the sky, but you see all that I am doing and cannot put together who I am.” So he left the religious leaders too, and met up with his disciples on the other side of the sea.

When he joined the disciples, Jesus discovered that they had forgotten to bring any bread to eat, and he sharply reprimanded them. He was not concerned that they had forgotten bread—he was more

Be Careful What You Wish For

I've been too busy to write, and that's probably a good thing. I've been doing stuff I really love with people I think are fantastic, and there's more of all that stuff to come in the next month. I've missed youth ministry, and it's good to be back to it. Really good.



And anyway, what I would have written about the last few weeks would have been the chicken joint and heterosexist and cissexist oppressiveness and a certain boycott of said chicken joint and a Christians eat said chicken sandwiches day. And then about how some people were going to go to the chicken joint and ask for just water, like we sometimes did to our friends in high school who worked at fast food joints. And then I heard about some folks who were going to do a same gender kiss-in at that chicken joint, which is dangerous in some parts of this country, frankly. Folks at my undergrad did a kiss-in; people literally walked by and gagged. Might have been me that walked by and gagged--my level of self-understanding was at an all-time low in those college years.

Aaaaannyway...

I'm glad I haven't had time to write, because mostly what I have felt is massive irritation at the conversation. Writing when I'm irritated usually produces pointedly nasty posts that I delete for the good of the world. 

When I was in seminary, one of the students in our lgbtq group spoke on a panel about the role of queer allies. She said, "I really appreciate your enthusiasm, but sometimes I just wish you'd take it down a notch or two. Most of us are just living our lives and getting by, and you take things too far." I remember being irritated by that because I was not out to the world yet, but I was passionate about all things lgbtq. I didn't want to be told to take things down a notch, I wanted to knock down walls.

This last month I've watched so very many straight folk go off about the chicken joint. Then I watched a bunch of folks go off about how we shouldn't go off about the chicken joint. Then I watched folks go off about how we shouldn't tell people whether or not they can go off about chicken joints. Then some folks said it wasn't about chicken.

And it's not about chicken--if y'all had an ounce of taste you wouldn't eat that chicken anyway. It's about money getting spent to hurt people like me. I'm so massively irritated that it is even necessary to discuss this that I forget that I spent the last several years rallying for people to discuss homophobia and transphobia and sexuality and gender. One of my primary complaints over the last several years has been that nobody wants to really talk about this stuff.

Times, they are a-changing, and people are talking. They just aren't always saying what I want them to say. And sometimes they say stuff that I and other queer folk have been saying for a really long time, and it's like those words from a queer ally are prophet's words, and I want to do childish things like troll their blogs and link back to our posts where we SAID this stuff before.

So, um, it's probably just as well that I am really really busy, doing things I really really love. Because what I wished for is that people would talk about this stuff, and they are. For better or worse, queerness is getting centered in Christian conversation. So yeah, be careful what you wish for, like my dad always says.
